Shout Factory Is Re-Releasing 1978’s Dr. Strange

On April 26th the world will finally get what it has been clambering for… 1978’s Doctor Strange on Blu-Ray! OK, that was a bit sarcastic, and I won’t even pretend that I’m not excited about this. DS78 is, without a doubt, one of my favorite television movies from the 1970s. It was difficult to find any comic book-related material on television in the dark ages, apart from a few standouts such as Wonder Woman, the Incredible Hulk, or Spiderman. We had a few Saturday morning shows and reruns of Superman, and Batman we could rely on to give us our comic book fix. Doctor Strange was something different. It was special. Although it didn’t have the traditional trappings of the superhero genre, it still kept that basic DNA of the comics. If only it had leaned into its full-throttle like Wonder Woman’s first season did. It may have been picked up as a series if it had been a bit more “fantastical”.

THERE IS A BARRIER THAT SEPARATES THE KNOWN FROM THE UNKNOWN...

Enter a world filled with sorcerers, powerful supernatural forces, and bizarre enchantments as the famed Marvel Comics superhero Dr. Strange comes to life to battle the forces of evil.

A modern hospital may seem worlds apart from the days of ancient sorcerers. But for psychiatrist Stephen Strange (Peter Hooten, Orca) and his patient Clea Lake (Eddie Benton, Sledge Hammer!), this is where those worlds collide... and the nightmare begins! Nothing Stephen Strange learned in medical school could prepare him for an attack by an evil sorceress from the "fourth dimension," Morgan le Fay (Jessica Walter, Arrested Development), a villainess who plans an invasion of unimaginable evil on Earth. Chosen by an ancient guardian of the spirit world to learn the mystic arts to defeat Morgan and safeguard the Earth, Stephen Strange must take the place of the Earth's last sorcerer. Come along for a fantastic adventure into the "fourth dimension" with... Dr. Strange!
