WOMEN OF SCI-FI WEDNESDAY: Pa’u Zotoh Zhaan

Zhaan is Delvian, species known for their religiousness. She is very sensual and likes to meditate in the nude. Zhaan took her religion very seriously, and regularly invoked her goddess’s support with prayers for strength, protection, mercy, and good fortune for Moya and the crew. She was tolerant of and curious about others’ beliefs and, with the exception of the Peacekeepers, usually had no prejudices against other species. Her religion stressed peace and diplomacy, but she was capable of defending herself against physical attack when pushed. As she said on one such occasion she is soft, not weak.

Erin Gray as Col. Wilma Deering

Erin Gray, as Wilma Deering, was one of my earliest crushes. She supplanted Barbie Benton and Cheryl Ladd as the one woman for me. I really enjoy the first season of Buck Rogers in the 25th century and how strong she was. There were more than a few out of character moments in that first season. Those were nothing compared to the second season where she was demoted to mere “eye candy” and a prop. The annoying robot, Crichton, had more to do with the weekly plots than she did. It was a shame, but I am still a huge fan of, what I will always remember to be a strong character.
