Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – A Review

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a 2023 fantasy heist comedy film based on the popular role-playing game of the same name. The film, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, and Justice Smith as a group of unlikely adventurers who embark on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.

D&D:HAT is the fourth installment in the Dungeons & Dragons film series, but it is not a sequel to the previous films, which were critically panned and commercially unsuccessful. Instead, it is a reboot that aims to capture the spirit and humor of the game, while also introducing a new story and characters to a wider audience.

Where the first film had a smaller budget and the scope also felt much smaller, plus the limitations of the technology left the fans wanting more while watching. There was something charming about the original, but it just fell short. The newest movie really delivered on a world that felt truly fleshed out. It’s a wonderful adventure, and while I don’t have an intimate knowledge of D&D, it seemed to have captured some of the weirdness of the creatures, and classes. The little easter-eggs, such as the crew from the Saturday morning cartoon from the 80s, were wonderful and I am sure there were even more for the more hardcore fans and players of the popular RPG.

The film had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 10, 2023, and was released in the United States on March 31, 2023, by Paramount Pictures. The film received positive reviews from critics and grossed $195 million worldwide. It was praised for its witty script, charismatic cast, thrilling action scenes, and faithful adaptation of the game’s lore and mechanics.

This success has sparked interest in a possible sequel, as well as other spin-offs and adaptations based on the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. The filmmakers have expressed their desire to explore more of the rich and diverse world of the game, and to introduce more iconic characters and creatures from the game’s history. However, no official announcements have been made yet regarding the future of the film series.
