Like most of my friends, I had a “Boom Box” in the 1980s. My box was very modest with one deck. I didn’t get a double deck system until 1987 when those cheap stacked stereo systems came out. By that point I was more fascinated with the CD player and totally ignoring the turntable. There are a series of wonderful photos of the budding Boom Box culture in 1980s New York over on Vintag.ES.
