Dark Multiverse: Crisis on Infinite Earths Review(ish)

No Spoilers.

So I’ve been a bit out of touch, and if you’ve stuck with me on some of the different mindshare channels out there you know why, and this one-shot took me by surprise. I am a sucker for legacy heroes, All-Star Comics from the 70’s and the All-Star Squadron. Getting into those heroes and titles when I was a kid was my gateway into the Golden Age of comic books. This one didn’t disappoint.

My first impression that I couldn’t shake throughout the whole book was that this book has a huge “What-If” vibe, and that’s NOT a bad thing. It opens just after the aftermath of the classic, “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. The, then, singular world is new. There are no more Multiverses, no more timelines, no more alternate versions of heroes. Our heroes remember their old worlds, timelines and friends who have passed. They end up fighting the same being that they fought in “Last Days of the Justice Society”, Surtur from ancient Norse legends. This time, as the title alludes to, it is much darker. This book is so character crushing that I question my own levels of schadenfreude when I read and enjoyed it so much. I also dug how the heroes refused to give up even after so many of their loved ones had been cut down.

This is a good read and I am happy to have spent $5.99 on it, which I rarely say these days.

Dark Multiverse: Crisis on Infinite Earths Report Card

Story: A+ ~ it’s a solid story with an unexpected ending

Art: A- ~ while I really liked the art some of it seemed a bit heavy with inks, which could just be because I am looking at a digital copy.

Dialogue: B+ ~ a bit repetitive, but I get why

Length: A- ~ 48 pages is a solid length for a book, I miss the 80 page giant though.

Another reason I picked this one up, which tipped me toward my decision to purchase it was the fact that is was a “One Shot” book. I dig One Shots, and not being roped into a soap operaesque title when my funds are deplenished for reasons is a welcomed option for me.
