Hawks reborn! Hawkman and Hawkwoman receive the precious gift of life one last time and return to the past where they were happiest-back with the Justice Society of America! But nostalgia’s not all it’s cracked up to be with the Injustice Society on the loose! And who’s the mysterious figure plotting to cut Hawkman’s final life short from the shadows?
First allow me to preface this entry with my personal opinion that I am not a great reviewer. This comic has inspired me enough to feel the need to express how impressed I was with the concept, the writing and the artwork. I will say that Carter’s helmet design… not a huge fan. It reminds me of “Golden Eagle” from the 70’s and I didn’t like it then either.
Hawkman has always been a favorite character of mine for decades. Having said that, I can’t point to a singular story that I can say was my favorite. I adore the concept of the character but many times the execution of him is just “meh” to me. The series from the early two thousands was close to being a good one. I tend to like the character more when he is paired with the JSA. That is just what issue twenty seven has done. The cover is what caught my eye, and the story just sucked me right in. I haven’t purchased a current comic from the mainstream big two for quite a while now, until I read a quack synopsys for this issue this morning. Having no clue what has come before this story really didn’t affect my enjoyment of the issue at all. Carter and Shayera died, I guess, in the last issue and this time were given a choice as to WHEN they could be reincarnated. They chose the 1940’s, and I must say… as a fan of the All-Star Squadron / Justice Society of America I was DELIGHTED.
There is one catch though… this is Carter’s LAST LIFE! There is a joy in the character’s actions but a bit of uncharacteristic hesitance as well. Shayera seems to be unphased by the fact that this is her last time around, but she is just enjoying the ride so far. Pick this issue up if you are an old-school fan of the JSA, older Hawkman tales, or just good stories.
I’ll be keeping up with this title until they choose to remove them from this timeline. Wow, I sound like one of those Comics Gate dicks who despise progress, and comics reflecting the times they are in appealing to more than just their little worlds. I am not. I just dig old comics. There are some new concepts that I really dig but can’t afford to get into.

Does the 1940s seen in this issue take place on Eart-1, Earth-2 or some other Earth? Ever since Crisis it’s been a bit confusing keeping track of the JSA’s continuity… although not nearly as bad as the Legion.
It’s not clear. I am just taking it at face value and not worrying about where it fits in. Recently DC has tossed the any attempt at continuity out of the window. Trying to continually force continuity keeps getting them in trouble. It’s just Funny Books, as my Papaw would always call them. I read them just for fun 🙂
That’s definitely a good way of looking at it.
I hope they’ll stick with the idea of not having “one” continuity. Seems like they’ve tried before (as with “Hypertime”) but the allure of making every comic part of one continuous story seems irresistible.
I bought into to it too many times. Let’s just have some solid stories and all be happy. Leave it to the reader to connect the dots, if they must. Having said that, I ADORE Crisis on Infinite Earths. Now if we could just having so many echos of that 12 issue title, we could just move on. 😉
