The Marvel Super Heroes 1966: A Personal Favorite

The Marvel Super Heroes is an American animated television series starring Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Iron-Man and the Sub Mariner from Marvel Comics. The first TV series based on Marvel characters, it debuted in 1966, and there are appearances by the Avengers and the Uncanny X-Men. The show gets a lot of shade thrown at it, and to be honest I can understand why but I adore this anachronistic offering from Marvel. While the animation is quite limited, the art is a direct lift from issues from the time. The theme songs are catchy and the voice acting is over the top and fun. I didn’t get to see this stable of cartoons until I was in the sixth grade and they ushered me into the summer of 1981. There is a certain charm to these episodes and I will always remember them fondly. Some are more re-watchable than others. I still watch The Sub-Mariner episodes from time-to-time.

This parody piece is so accurate that it was pure joy to watch.

  1. I loved everything about these shows, including the crappy animation. These cartoons were probably my first exposure to Jack Kirby art.

  2. These are probably some of my earliest TV memories. It’s possible I saw them when they were first on, when I would have been 4 or 5 years old…
