My Favorite Streaming Shows this Year

Contrary to appearances, I enjoy new media as well as old. From both Avatar series and the most awesome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of 2012 to Filoni’s Clone Wars and Rebels, I love great stories. Even when those stories are remakes of childhood favorites. Some of these remakes are far better than any of the originals. So here are a few of my favorites from this year, in no particular order…

Voltron: Legendary Defender

While this technically ended in 2018, my viewing habits lean more toward viewing an episode every other day or week. The final season of this show fell well into 2019 for me. I have great memories of watching the original American version of this program, trying to re-watch those episodes are somewhat painful at times so I welcomed this show with an open heart and mind.

The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy is hyper violent, but it has heart and a lot of smart writing. Season two has been greenlit and that has me stoked.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

This show is targeted to a younger viewing audience, but it has some really clever writing and clean design. Don’t let the occasional goofiness fool you, this is a solid show.

The Mandalorian

So, no brainer and not a Netflix show but it is new and streaming so it belongs here on my list. I love this show and how it is released on a schedule. It’s so Star Wars that it makes the original Star Wars question its own Star Warsiness.

The Dragon Prince

Finally there is the Dragon Prince. It has some great voice acting, perfect design & animation, along with wonderful storytelling. The story is compelling, intense and funny at times. With season three under its belt it has set the stage for a very interesting season four.

I would add the final season of Arrow, even though I do stream it, it’s not a streaming show (but it is, even though it really isn’t) Are there any streaming shows that you are watching that I should be? Let me know.
